A Journey with Leaves

Posted on | September 20, 2011 | No Comments

P1120421Summer is coming to an end and once more we begin to turn inward here at Elysian Field Originals with an eye to nesting for the winter.  Leaves are already beginning to fall and I’ve collected quite a few from the area here in Rhode Island, as well as  Maine.

The recent hurricane, Irene, wreaked havoc with many of us along the Eastern corridor, and now that things are slowly returning to normal I can finish up on some polymer commission pieces I am woefully behind on.  The only good Irene did was to aid me with my leaf collection, lol.P1120115

While out walking the other day I was gathering leaf specimens and began to think of the strange journey that these beautiful organics have taken me on. Who would have thought that a leaf would foster friendships with people worldwide in places such as Belgium, England, Italy, China, Australia, and across the USA…a leaf could do all this?

Leaves are so complex, yet simplistic in their beauty. The colors, textures, sizes, are all unique and none are identical, much like the people I create my wearable art pieces for.  I am so grateful for the opportunities that have come along…mostly for the wonderful people I have met along the way…on my journey with leaves…

Nothing nicer on a sunny Friday morning than sipping a cup of coffee, checking emails, and finding out I am featured for Friday’s artist on Polymer Clay Daily. Many thanks to Cynthia Tinapple for the feature. She’s someone I have followed and admired for years so it was a real honor.

Happy Friday all!

Spirit of the Forest, Drunk Drivers, and Polymer Clay

Posted on | October 6, 2010 | No Comments

Hello all and I’m sorry to have disappeared for a bit. A week ago I was rear-ended by a drunk driver and it left me very sore. How scary was the fact that the lady was a nurse on her way to care for a patient. Yikes!!! All is well now, my car is on it’s way to being repaired, and life goes on once more.

Below is a really pretty treasury curated by AutumnBlaze that I am in (Woodland Frolic Necklace).  You can click on the pictures and it will take you to each shop, I highly recommend checking out the artists here, some amazing hand crafted art.

I’m working on a few new pieces right now and am thinking of putting together some tutorials to post.  My question to you all is what type of tutorial would you like to see?  Leave a comment as it will help me decide which direction to take.  My latest miniature is a dragon or gargoyle. I love to work in miniature but it is hard to detail all at once and so I am series baking it as I progress.  Next comes feet, claws and teeth all in translucent clay, continue on with the spikes on back, add wings, a tail and paint. The gargoyle is only 3” tall!Gargoyle WIP

Better late then never…always late to the party, lol, I thought I’d start off with my favorite song from the movie. I love Sheryl Crowe and Stevie Nicks…

I am also doing a giveaway for a pair of earrings! Not just any earrings will do…how about some “batty” threads for your ears in celebration of my favorite character in the movie, Aunt Francis!! You won’t want to use these Bat Wings in your spells!!

Sculpted bat earrings have a 2″ wingspan and are reversible with hand painted skeletal images. 3 1/2″ sterling silver earring threads allow the bats to swing freely and spin and are accented with fiery polished agate burnt orange rondelles. Optional earring guards are also included to prevent the pesky fiends from escaping!

Fall on Friday

Posted on | September 10, 2010 | 2 Comments

It’s a cool lovely day here in New England.  The leaves are getting ready to turn color once again.  It’s my favorite time of year and as I mix up a new batch of polymer clay for some leaf pendants, I wanted to share this lovely array of leaves shared by David Shane Odom, a truly gifted artist. A leaf is one of the most beautiful gifts of nature, from the time they newly bud in fresh citrus colors, to deep, rich earthy colors as they mature.  Shane says it wonderfully,

“Leaves are the glowing gems that inspires our art, enraptures out hearts, and enriches our gardens. Once the leaves start falling, they are a wealth of carbon and organic matter to be carefully gathered, and later we take up their nutrients through our vegetables, and make them one with us. You are all Oak Trees, and Maples, and Sycamores, and Poplars.”…David Shane Odom

Click on the photo below to visit Shane’s shop on Etsy and see some of his wonderful masks!

Fall 2010

I use leaves as inspiration in my artwork, preferring to spend my time outdoors putting about in the woods looking for treasures like the one’s Shane has collected above. Thank you Shane for the lovely woodland visit today!
